VoIP - What's it all about?

Published: 23 February 2010

What is VoIP?

VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, technology enables telephone calls to be made using a broadband connection instead of an analogue phone line. There are presently a large range of VoIP service providers that offer various packages and tariffs (most are free) that include one local phone number (where applicable) or a 0845 or 0870 number depending on individual business requirements. As part of the free package and phone number deals currently on offer, the necessary software to install the VoIP system is also provided by most VoIP providers at no additional charge. Once the software has been configured it is then possible to make and receive telephone calls through a dedicated PC with a broadband connection with the use of a microphone or a normal telephone (which will need a VoIP adaptor that are readily available or a VoIP phone which has the adaptor already built in).

VPN and Wireless Security

Published: 30 October 2009

As was recently demonstrated on BBC's Watchdog programme using a wireless hotspot can be a risky business. This is due to the necessity of leaving the hotspot open so that much of your internet communication is visible to the rest of the users at the same hotspot. Whilst the recent programme blamed the hotspot providers, there are very good technical reasons why these hotspots are left open - mainly so you can access them easily.

SEO - What is it?

SEO (or Search Engine Optimisation) is the process by which you analyse and modify your website in order to drive relevant traffic to your site. A lot of people define it as basically enhancing your rankings in Google, this definition is not accurate, the key here is relevance. To enhance your rankings on Google (ignoring relevance) is fairly simple and will not necessarily bring you the people that you would like, to your site.

eCommerce, short for electronic commerce is the process used to distribute, buy, sell or market goods and services, and the transfer of funds on-line, through electronic communications or networks. Since 1994, when Jeff Bezos first launched Amazon.com from his own garage, businesses of all shapes and sizes (including Dell, eBay and Walmart) have expanded their on-line presence and at any given time there are approximately 8 million consumers worldwide that actively shop and buy through web-based retailers. On-line surveys predict that on-line retail revenues will exceed the quarter trillion dollar mark by 2011.

Convert documents to PDF and save money on print and postage costs

Published: 13 July 2009
If you have comprehensive product brochures or printed catalogues you will already be aware that their maintenance, distribution and postage can be a costly overhead. A highly popular alternative is the production of "portable document files", more commonly known as PDF. PDF's are easy to create and once they have been converted they can be attached to an email, or saved onto a variety of storage devices including CD's and memory sticks, as well as uploaded to a company website where site visitors may view and download files at their own convenience.
